A contractor quoting a heat pump repair in Marshall County has to work out what actually wore the system down before they can say what it needs. 108 severe weather events were recorded in Marshall County, Indiana between 2015 and 2024. That puts this county in roughly the middle of the national range, which means severe weather is a real part of operating here but not so dominant that it explains every failed component on its own. Refrigerant circuits, reversing valves and compressors that give out in conditions like these tend to show age and installation quality in what a contractor finds when they open the unit.

A heat pump sitting in a house this old has its own record, and the repair turns on what that record looks like inside. Half the homes in Marshall County, Indiana were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor opening the unit in a house from that era is not working from the permit date; they are working from what they find: whether the compressor has worn past a repairable threshold, whether the refrigerant circuit holds, whether the parts the system takes are still in production. Age of the housing sets the context, but the bill is written by what the opened equipment actually is.

The Parts of a Heat Pump a Contractor Checks First

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, ducted air handler and duct runs, connected by pipes to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor unit sits on a pad outside the house and holds the compressor and one of the two coils. Both are common starting points when a heat pump stops doing its job. The compressor moves the refrigerant through the system, and the coil transfers heat between the refrigerant and the outside air.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the second coil and the blower fan that pushes conditioned air through the home. The expansion valve sits between the two coils and controls refrigerant flow. A reversing valve, usually inside the outdoor unit, is what allows the system to shift between heating and cooling, and it gets examined when the system runs but produces the wrong result.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines which parts apply to the specific system in your home.
